Beyond the myth, there is the text that Egyptologists Richard Jasnow and Karl-Theodor Zauzich called The Ancient Egyptian Book of Thoth. According to the Johns Hopkins description, it is a Demotic composition preserved on more than forty papyri from the Graeco-Roman period, probably connected with scribes of the House of Life.
This text is not identical to the legend of the book stolen from the tomb. It is a difficult fragmentary composition in dialogue form, involving a figure who loves knowledge and a divine or priestly authority associated with Thoth.
House of Life: where knowledge was kept
The House of Life was the environment of scribes, ritual texts, medicine, magic, liturgy and the copying of sacred knowledge. When the Book of Thoth is associated with this world, it stops being only fantasy and enters the real world of Egyptian priestly archives.
