What the name describes

The term usually points to andesite blocks in an approximate H shape, with recesses, joints, flat surfaces and geometric angles. They appear at Puma Punku, part of Tiwanaku, an Andean political and ritual center that flourished long before the Inca empire.

These pieces draw attention because they look modular. Looking at them, many people think of fitting, standardization, prefabrication and architectural design. The real question is excellent: how did an ancient society produce, transport and organize such complex stones in a high-altitude environment?

Puma Punku and Tiwanaku

Tiwanaku was one of the great cultures of the Andes. UNESCO describes the city as the capital of a powerful pre-Hispanic empire, with its peak between AD 500 and 900. Puma Punku was part of this complex and probably functioned as a monumental, ceremonial and political space.

The problem for reconstruction is that the complex is heavily destroyed. There was dismantling, stone reuse, looting, erosion and loss of context. Today we see fragments. The temptation is to imagine the entire building from scattered pieces.

Why the blocks seem impossible

The blocks impress through straight cuts, flat faces, square recesses, joints and repeated forms. Studies on Tiwanaku recognize the sophistication of the stonework and the difficulty of reconstructing exactly which tools and procedures were used.

But “hard to explain completely” is not the same as “impossible for humans.” Archaeology works with incomplete traces. Sometimes tools were not preserved, not identified or were simpler than we imagine, used with enormous skill, time and social organization.

In alternative archaeology, H Blocks became a favorite visual proof for Ancient Aliens, the Ancient Builder Race or lost civilizations such as Atlantis / Lemuria / Mu. The modular form is read as machine part, energy station, acoustic system, portal or remnant of superior engineering.

This reading grows because the image is strong. A geometric block in a ruin looks more “industrial” than “ritual.” The risk is projecting modern categories onto ancient Andean architecture: if it looks like a factory piece to us, that does not mean it was made with modern or non-human technology.

What is source and what is evidence

As source, there is UNESCO-recognized heritage, archaeological studies, architectural surveys, 3D models, stone analyses, reconstruction hypotheses and work on Tiwanaku culture. This documents the pieces, their sophistication and their Andean context.

As evidence for extraordinary claims, the situation is limited. There is no proportional public proof that H Blocks are machines, portals, energy batteries or products of a non-human race.
