Mars is rocky, cold, dry at the present surface and has a thin atmosphere mostly made of carbon dioxide. It has polar caps, giant volcanoes, deep canyons and signs of ancient water. Its past appears wetter and possibly more habitable.
Martian science does not need ruins to be extraordinary. The question of past microbial life is already enormous. If Mars preserved habitable environments, it tells a parallel story of how planets become living, dry or sterile.
Water, clays and habitable environments
Orbiters and rovers identified water-formed minerals, ancient riverbeds, deltas and sediments. Perseverance explores Jezero crater, an ancient delta, while Curiosity investigates environmental history in Gale crater.
These data support a serious search for biosignatures, not lost cities. Past microbial life would be monumental even without temples or humanoids. The real mystery is smaller in spectacle and larger in consequence.
Viking and ambiguity

Mars in science fiction

There is no public, verifiable evidence of secret human colonies on Mars. Distance, logistics, radiation, life support and launch traces make the claim extremely demanding. It should be read as extraordinary hypothesis and contemporary mythology.
Terraforming and human futures
Terraforming Mars fascinates scientists, engineers and writers. It would require thick atmosphere, warming, radiation protection and enormous timescales.
Even serious proposals face material limits. Before dreaming of a second home, humanity must ask what ethics it carries. Mars can become a laboratory of expansion or a mirror of terrestrial mistakes.
Martian meteorites and samples
Some meteorites found on Earth came from Mars, allowing study of its composition before sample-return missions. The famous ALH84001 reignited debate about possible microstructures associated with life, but biological interpretation remained controversial.
The case teaches a central lesson: extraordinary evidence must survive geological, chemical and contamination explanations. Mars does not require interpretive haste. A rock can be fascinating without becoming immediate proof of civilization.
