The Order of the Illuminati was founded on May 1, 1776 by Adam Weishaupt, a professor in Ingolstadt, Bavaria. His project was born inside the climate of the European Enlightenment: criticism of clericalism, defense of reason, moral education and social reform. It was a secret organization, with degrees, internal names, discipline and an attempt to recruit in circles close to Freemasonry.

This historical fact is the first engine of the myth. Unlike a fantasy with no basis, the Illuminati really existed. They were banned by Bavarian authorities in the 1780s, documents were seized, members dispersed and the order lost public continuity. But exactly this combination of real existence, secrecy, repression and incomplete archive created the perfect terrain for the question that never disappeared: what if they did not end?

At the end of the eighteenth century, authors such as Augustin Barruel and John Robison helped turn the Bavarian order into an explanation for the French Revolution and for the destabilization of Christian and monarchical Europe. The narrative was simple and powerful: revolutionary ideas had not emerged from complex social, economic and political crises; they had been coordinated by a secret network.

From there, Illuminati stopped naming only a historical group. It began to function as a backstage character. In each era, the name was reused to explain different fears: revolution, secularization, banks, wars, communism, capitalism, pop culture, technology, surveillance, symbols and media.

This is where the conspiracy takes its modern form. The strong thesis says the Illuminati survived suppression, infiltrated Freemasonry, banks, universities, governments, press and foundations, and began directing world events through symbols, planned wars, manufactured crises and psychological control of the masses. In this reading, official history is surface; the real world is administered by an initiatory elite that knows hidden laws of power.

The fascination comes from a legitimate intuition: power is rarely fully visible. There are lobbies, influence networks, private clubs, agencies, wealthy families, multilateral organizations and closed forums. The error begins when all these different structures are compressed into one single, omnipotent and almost eternal entity.
