In some narratives, it would not merely accelerate a craft; it would open shortcuts, allow instantaneous travel or explain maneuvers attributed to UFOs.

The imaginary gained force through authors and inventors who tried to associate rotation, electromagnetism and gravity. In the late twentieth century, NASA investigated speculative ideas through its breakthrough propulsion physics program. The important point is that studying extreme possibilities does not confirm secret engines. The purpose of such programs was to test difficult questions, discard weak paths and separate hypothesis from usable engineering.

A concrete case is Robert Talley's 1990 U.S. Air Force study on electrostatic propulsion concepts associated with the Biefeld-Brown effect. The popular claim held that electric fields could produce mysterious lift. In vacuum tests, however, the expected effect did not appear above the detection limit. Later studies also indicated that many lifters work by ion wind in air, not by gravitational control. The case is valuable because it shows the boundary: the claim sounded revolutionary, was tested, and did not deliver the miracle.

Another layer comes from “torsion fields” associated with Anatoly Akimov and Gennady Shipov, popularized in post-Soviet circles. There, torsion became a subtle field supposedly able to transmit information, heal, allow nonlocal communication and perhaps propel objects. The language borrows real physics terms, such as spin and spacetime, but leaps toward applications without solid independent validation. That leap is exactly what feeds the drive myth.

The narrative says radical propulsion technologies already exist, but were classified by militaries, aerospace corporations or breakaway groups. In this reading, humanity is not stuck with known physics because discovery is lacking, but because politics is blocking release.

This explains why Nikola Tesla appears so often in this ecosystem. Tesla becomes the symbol of the suppressed inventor: someone who supposedly touched free energy, wireless transmission and deep forces of nature, then was erased by economic interests. Even when historical connections are weak, the figure performs a narrative function: proving that the future was already discovered and then hidden.

There is also an important caution: “unproven” does not mean “impossible by decree.” Physics still investigates gravity, inertia, vacuum and spacetime. But studying open theories is one thing; claiming that operational engines already move secret fleets is another. To leave myth behind, one would need repeatable demonstration, independent measurement, energy accounting, thrust in vacuum, error control and public review.
