Electric Sun is not simply “the Sun has electricity.” The strong thesis says something much more radical: the Sun would be a cosmic-scale discharge lamp, powered by electric currents from the galactic environment, rather than mainly by nuclear fusion in its core. Where the idea came from

The modern Electric Sun is usually traced to American engineer Ralph E. Juergens in the 1970s. He proposed that the Sun could function as a focus of electrical discharge, connected to potential differences on a galactic scale. Instead of reading the hot corona, sunspots, flares and solar wind as secondary effects of a fusion star, Juergens read them as signs of plasma discharge.

After him, Earl Milton explored the model, Wal Thornhill made it a core pillar of the Electric Universe, and Donald E. Scott, electrical engineer and author of The Electric Sky, helped popularize the technical language for an alternative audience.

What conspiracy or critique sits behind it

The narrative is not only scientific; it is also culturally conspiratorial. The basic story says modern astrophysics became trapped in a “gravity-only,” mathematical and institutional paradigm, ignoring cosmic electricity because accepting it would threaten careers, textbooks, funding and academic authority.

Within this view, dark matter, dark energy, black holes and solar fusion appear as patches on a dominant model. Electric Universe presents itself as the simple heresy: look at plasma, discharges, Birkeland currents and laboratory behavior before accepting cosmological abstractions.

SAFIRE and the current phase

The SAFIRE Project was created to test, in the laboratory, an experimental version of the Electric Sun hypothesis using plasma around a spherical anode. The project later connected with Aureon Energy, which now presents itself as a company developing electromagnetic plasma technologies for energy and material transmutation.

For supporters, SAFIRE is a clue that Electric Sun may have experimental backing. For critics, it is an interesting plasma experiment, but not validation that the real Sun is powered by galactic currents.

What the model claims

The classical version says the Sun is an anode in a plasma discharge. The heliosphere would be part of a larger circuit; electrons would be attracted toward the Sun; positive ions would be accelerated outward, forming the solar wind; and the hot corona would be a region of intense electric field, comparable to discharge phenomena.

This is seductive because it gives a concrete image: the Sun as a cosmic lamp plugged into a galactic outlet. It also seems to visually explain arcs, filaments, jets, auroras, comets and plasma structures that really do exist in space.

What science accepts and what it does not

Solar science accepts plenty of “electric energy” in the broad sense: the Sun is plasma, has magnetic fields, magnetic reconnection, charged particles, solar wind and interaction with planetary magnetospheres. Missions such as Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter study exactly this electromagnetic environment.

What is not accepted as consensus is the conclusion that the Sun's main energy comes from external electrical powering. The standard model remains nuclear fusion in the core, supported by stellar physics, solar neutrinos, spectroscopy, helioseismology and stellar evolution.

Why it grabs people

Electric Sun has narrative energy because it joins three things: stunning solar images, an anti-institutional critique and the promise that the universe is more alive, connected and electric than official science admits.
