La Peyrère proposed, based on his reading of Paul's Epistle to the Romans (especially chapters 5-7), that the creation described in Genesis 1 produced a set of humans before Adam — the Pre-Adamites — and that Adam was only the ancestor of the Jewish people, not of all humanity. This proposal shocked Catholics, Protestants and Calvinists alike, leading to La Peyrère's imprisonment by the Inquisition in 1656.
La Peyrère's immediate motivation was pragmatic: to resolve an exegetical problem that the geographical exploration of the 15th and 16th centuries had made urgent. How to explain the existence of peoples in the Americas, sub-Saharan Africa and East Asia who did not descend from Noah if all humanity were descendants of Adam and then of the flood? The Pre-Adamite hypothesis offered a way out — but at enormous theological cost.
The Pre-Adamite controversy had reverberations that lasted centuries. In the 18th century, some Enlightenment thinkers used the hypothesis to argue for the plurality of human origins — polygenism — in opposition to biblical monogenism. In the 19th century, polygenism was unfortunately mobilized to justify scientific racism, with claims that different races constituted distinct species or subspecies with separate origins. This base ideological use has nothing to do with the genuine scientific questions about human antiquity.
Göbekli Tepe and the Revolution in Human Chronology
In 1994, German archaeologist Klaus Schmidt identified the site of Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey as something radically different from anything catalogued until then. Subsequent excavations revealed a complex of stone circles with decorated T-shaped pillars — some weighing up to 20 tons — dated to approximately 9,600 BC. This makes it the oldest known monumental ritual complex, built at least 6,000 years before Stonehenge and about 7,000 years before the pyramids of Giza.
What makes Göbekli Tepe especially revolutionary is the context: it was built by hunter-gatherers, before the invention of agriculture. The prevailing model of civilizational development assumed that monumental construction presupposed agriculture, permanent settlement and established social hierarchy. Göbekli Tepe inverted this equation: it seems that ritual and architectural complexity may have preceded — and perhaps even driven — the transition to agriculture.
For the Pre-Adamite context, Göbekli Tepe is enormously relevant because it demonstrates that the timeline of human complexity needs to be pushed back much further than the 20th century academic consensus supposed. If in 9,600 BC there was already sufficient social organization to move and sculpt 20-ton stones and create elaborate iconography, what came before? Only a fraction of the site's excavation has been completed — Schmidt estimated that 95% remained to be excavated before his death in 2014.
The Younger Dryas and the Cataclysm Hypothesis
The Younger Dryas was a period of abrupt cooling lasting from approximately 12,900 to 11,700 years ago, interrupting the post-glacial warming that had begun after the Last Glacial Maximum. The Younger Dryas Impact hypothesis, published in 2007 by Richard Firestone and 25 collaborators in the journal PNAS, proposes that the Younger Dryas was triggered by an impact or atmospheric explosion of comet fragments. Evidence includes a layer of nanodiamonds, impact spherules, platinum and soot layers found at archaeological sites on four continents dated to 12,900 years ago. The extinction of Ice Age megafauna (mammoths, mastodons, giant ground sloths) and the disappearance of the Clovis culture from North America occurred simultaneously.
For the Pre-Adamite hypothesis, the Younger Dryas is crucial: if an advanced civilization existed before 12,900 years ago, a global-scale cataclysm at that time could explain its near-total disappearance. Surface civilizations would have been destroyed; survivors in caves, remote regions or possibly underground could have preserved fragments of knowledge that reached the historical record as myths of golden ages, floods and lost civilizations.
Antarctica and the Piri Reis Maps
The Piri Reis Map, produced by Ottoman admiral Piri Reis in 1513 and discovered in 1929 at Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, is frequently cited in Pre-Adamite and ancient civilization contexts. The map shows the coasts of South America and, on its lower edge, a region that some researchers interpret as Antarctica — 'officially' discovered only in 1820.
Charles Hapgood, professor at Keene State College in New Hampshire, published Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings (1966), arguing that the Piri Reis map and other medieval and Renaissance maps suggested knowledge of an ice-free Antarctica — possible only during pre-glaciation periods. Hapgood also proposed the theory of crustal displacement as a mechanism for rapid geographical shifts. Albert Einstein wrote to Hapgood supporting the importance of the questions he raised, though not necessarily his specific conclusions.
Academic evaluation is more cautious: historical cartographers and geographers argue that the lower coast of the Piri Reis map is probably a speculative or distorted representation of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, not Antarctica. 16th century cartography was full of speculations about terrae incognitae based on theories of balance of terrestrial masses, not actual exploration. The question remains debated, but the Antarctic interpretation is not the consensus among cartography history specialists.
Megalithic Sites and the Question of Technique
One of the most persistent arguments for the existence of advanced prehistoric civilizations is the degree of technical precision at megalithic sites that seems to exceed the capabilities of known cultures of the respective periods. Sacsayhuamán in Peru uses blocks weighing up to 360 tons fitted together with precision of fractions of a millimeter, without mortar. The walls of the Temple of Puma Punku at Tiwanaku in Bolivia show polished surfaces and H-shaped fittings of extraordinary precision in andesite — one of the hardest rocks available.
The megalithic complexes of Baalbek in present-day Lebanon include the Stone of the South — a monolith of approximately 1,650 tons still in the quarry — and the three blocks of the base of the Temple of Jupiter (the Trilithons) each weighing about 800 tons. No completely satisfactory explanation exists for how these blocks were moved and positioned with the technologies of the Roman period, which built the temples on this older base.
The conventional interpretation is that techniques such as ramps, levers, sledges and large human labor forces were sufficient — and there is archaeological evidence of the use of these techniques in various cultures. The alternative interpretation is that the precision and scale exceed what these techniques could achieve, implying unknown technology. This is a genuinely technical question where engineers and archaeologists have divergent views, and where replication experiments have produced partially convincing but not definitive results.
Pre-Adamites in Religious and Esoteric Narratives
The idea of humanities prior to the current one appears in multiple religious and esoteric traditions beyond the Christian context where the term was coined. Hindu cosmology describes four yugas (cosmic ages) in a cycle — Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali Yuga, the current one — with declining human capabilities and living conditions over each cycle. Humanities from previous yugas would have been larger, longer-lived and more spiritually developed.
Theosophy as elaborated by Helena Blavatsky developed a cosmology of 'root races' — seven fundamental races succeeding each other in the history of terrestrial humanity, each inhabiting a different continent. Previous races would include the Lemurians (inhabitants of a continent called Lemuria in the Indian/Pacific Ocean) and the Atlanteans (from Atlantis). Blavatsky placed these races on timescales of tens of millions of years — far beyond what evolutionary biology identifies for the emergence of hominids.
In the contemporary context of SSP and alien contact narratives, Pre-Adamites are frequently described as a non-human race (possibly of extraterrestrial origins) that arrived on Earth tens of thousands of years ago, built advanced civilizations in Antarctica when the continent was temperate, and was forced underground or into subterranean bases after the Younger Dryas cataclysm. Their structures and knowledge would be preserved under Antarctic ice, awaiting discovery.
Frozen Antarctica and Speculations About Hidden Structures
Antarctica has been the scene of growing speculation about structures hidden beneath the ice. Satellite images, including some from Google Earth, show geological formations on the continent with shapes that some interpret as artificial structures — the 'Antarctic pyramids' — though geologists universally identify them as nunataks (rocky peaks sculpted by glacial erosion). Mount Pobeda and similar formations have pyramidal appearance resulting from erosion, not construction.
What is verifiable: Antarctica contained forests and was habitable 34 million years ago, before the onset of glaciation. Fossils of temperate forests, including tree trunks, have been found in scientific expeditions. The continent was geologically connected to South America, Africa and Australia as part of the supercontinent Gondwana. There are estimates that subglacial lakes exist — including Lake Vostok, approximately 250 km long — that preserve ecosystems isolated for millions of years.
What is speculation without evidence: artificial structures preserved under Antarctic ice, bases of Pre-Adamites or other advanced groups, and any narrative about governments knowing these structures and keeping them secret. International scientific expeditions to Antarctica (including researchers from dozens of countries) have found no evidence of artificial structures. The Antarctic Treaty (1959), with 54 signatory countries, allows cross-inspections of facilities — making the maintenance of large-scale secrecy logistically unlikely.

Modern genomics provides directly relevant data for questions about human origins. Mapping the human genome and population genomics studies have demonstrated that all modern humans (Homo sapiens) share a recent common ancestor in Africa — the so-called 'Mitochondrial Adam' and 'Mitochondrial Eve', estimated at 100,000-200,000 years ago (mitochondrial) and 100,000-340,000 years ago (Y chromosome), respectively.
Ancient DNA analyses — extracted from bones of Neanderthals, Denisovans and other extinct hominids — revealed something surprising: modern humans outside Africa carry between 1-4% Neanderthal DNA, and populations from Oceania and Southeast Asia carry Denisovan DNA. Critical Reading: What the Pre-Adamite Hypothesis Requires
For the hypothesis of Pre-Adamites as an advanced civilization to be valid, it would need to satisfy verifiable criteria that are currently not met. First, physical evidence: structures, artifacts or materials that cannot be explained by known civilizations. What exists are impressive megalithic structures whose construction is challenging but not impossible with period techniques — and sites like Göbekli Tepe that expand, but do not contradict, the evolutionary model.
Second, consistency with scientific data: the hypothesis must be compatible with the geological, archaeological and genetic record. A technologically advanced civilization would leave physical traces — pollution, artifacts, environmental modifications — that the geological record would preserve. None of these traces has been found in periods prior to Homo sapiens. Genetics shows no discontinuities that would imply Pre-Adamites.
Third, explanatory mechanism: how would a civilization sufficiently advanced to build megalithic structures of extraordinary precision disappear without leaving almost any verifiable trace? Frozen Antarctica as a repository is a narratively elegant hypothesis, but requires that stone structures of millions of tons be preserved under kilometers of ice without detection by multiple remote sensing methods used in scientific research.
