What it means to go beyond

The heliopause is the boundary where the solar wind no longer dominates as before and meets the interstellar medium. The Voyagers crossed this region, but that does not mean they have already left the Sun's gravitational influence entirely.
Voyager: the physical proof of crossing
Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were launched in 1977 to visit the giant planets. After Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, they kept travelling. Voyager 1 crossed into interstellar space in 2012; Voyager 2 did the same in 2018.
That is what makes the theme so powerful: for the first time, human-made objects are directly measuring a region that, for most of history, existed only as calculation, myth or imagination.
