Quantum Teleportation: What Physics Actually Did

In 1993, Charles Bennett of IBM Research and collaborators published a seminal paper in Physical Review Letters proposing what they called 'quantum teleportation' — a protocol by which the exact quantum state of a particle can be transferred to another particle at a distant location, without the original particle needing to traverse space. The procedure uses quantum entanglement — the non-local correlation between particles — combined with classical communication.

In 1997, Anton Zeilinger and his team at the University of Innsbruck performed the first successful quantum teleportation experiment with photons. Since then, quantum teleportation has been demonstrated with photons, atoms, ions and other quantum systems. One of the most persistent narratives about secret military teleportation is the so-called Philadelphia Experiment — the alleged invisibility and teleportation of the US Navy ship USS Eldridge in October 1943. According to the narrative, experiments based on Einstein's 'Unified Field Theory' made the ship temporarily invisible to radar, and in a more extreme version, teleported it from the port of Philadelphia to Norfolk, Virginia.

The narrative's origin lies in letters sent to astronomer Morris Jessup in 1955-1956 by a man signing himself as 'Carlos Allende' (probably Carl Allen), describing supposed experiences with the USS Eldridge. The historical investigation is clear: the USS Eldridge was in the Gulf of Guinea in October 1943 — documented by its official deck log, consultable at the National Archives. Real crew members of the Eldridge denied any anomalous experience. The US Navy investigated the claims and found no evidence of any such experiment.

The Philadelphia Experiment is an exemplary case of a narrative that combines plausible elements (magnetic degaussing research on ships was real during World War II), apparent anomalies (Carl Allen's accounts), and progressive amplification through retellings. Magnetic degaussing research — actually carried out to protect ships from magnetic mines — was narratively transformed into teleportation, creating a much more dramatic story.

Project Montauk: The Most Elaborate Narrative

Project Montauk is a series of claims about secret experiments allegedly conducted at the former Air Force base in Montauk, Long Island, New York, between the 1970s and 1980s. The complete narrative includes: mind control experiments, time travel, teleportation, creation of inter-dimensional portals, and experiments on kidnapped children. The primary sources are books by Preston Nichols and Peter Moon (The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time, 1992), claiming to be based on recovered memories of participants.

Investigation of the Montauk narrative reveals patterns common to many recovered memory cases and secret experiment claims: total absence of verifiable documentation, impossibility of confirming the identities or stories of alleged participants, and accounts that grow in detail and elaboration over time. The Montauk base (Camp Hero) did exist and was decommissioned — today it is a state park. But no physical evidence of experiments of the type described was found in the facilities.

Project Montauk became part of popular culture through the Netflix series Stranger Things, whose creators cited Montauk as inspiration. This cultural entry point deserves attention: for many viewers, the distinction between creative fiction inspired by conspiracy narratives and factual claims about real events is not clear. The series is declared fiction; Nichols and Moon's original claims are presented as non-fiction, albeit without evidence.

Teleportation in Military Programs: What Was Researched

There are verifiable documents about military research on frontier physics topics. A 2004 report produced for the US Air Force by physicist Eric Davis titled Teleportation Physics Study was funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory and reviewed the scientific literature on possible teleportation mechanisms, including quantum teleportation, wormhole teleportation, and 'psychic teleportation' (based on alleged remote viewing phenomena).

The report is interesting precisely because it is a real government document that addresses topics ranging from the scientifically established to the highly speculative without clear distinction between these levels.
